Preschool

The mission of St. Bernadette Preschool is to prepare our children for kindergarten in a Christ-filled learning community. We build a solid Catholic foundation and a love for learning in each child who enters our classrooms.

To reach this mission, our preschool program includes a developmentally appropriate curriculum based on the Ohio Department of Education’s Early Learning and Development Standards. Our curriculum is designed to suit the developmental needs of young children, promoting their spiritual, social-emotional, and intellectual growth. It is center based, using an integrated approach where learning occurs through active exploration and interaction in a “hands on” environment. Multi-sensory activities that enhance the total development of the children are planned in a sequential manner that follows a theme or is part of a unit.

Curriculum

Spiritual Development

Spiritual Development is an integral part of St. Bernadette’s Preschool. In preparation for more formal instruction in the years ahead, students are instructed using Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Children gather in our atrium, a room filled with materials to learn about God and designated for spiritual growth, and learn about God through exploration.

Language and Literacy Development

Language is the development of communication skills that enables children to share their world with others. At the preschool level, we focus on language, reading and writing. Students are taught to communicate effectively, develop their vocabularies, and comprehend age-appropriate texts. Students listen to and share stories, participate in finger plays, and write classroom stories as they journal their way through the school year.

Social and Emotional Development

Social and emotional development is a key component of our preschool. We recognize this development lays the foundation for our students’ long-term academic and social success (National Research Council, 2008). Positive social skills are intertwined into all areas of learning.

Physical Well-Being and Motor Development

Motor skills are a vital part of young children’s educational experience. Rich learning centers that include physical activity allow for exploration and fine and gross motor development. Our curriculum also focuses on healthy lifestyles. We encourage basic health practices such as regular hand washing and identifying safe adults.
